Because of its lack of adequate natural ventilation systems, the basement provides fertile grounds for the growth off mold spores. There is very little heat in the basement, and conditions are usually dark and moist. Water from leaky pipes or inadequately waterproofed walls can cause mold spores to be attracted and to begin their breeding and infestation process. Mold in a basement can cover all surfaces of the basement like the walls, floors, ceilings etc.
Of all the places where mold can fester and grow, the basement is the most dangerous. This is because the spores can easily find their way out of the basement and into the main house above through the vents and ducts of the HVAC system in the basement. Once inside the main house, these spores will feely disperse into the air, and begin to settle down in different parts of the house, causing severe Asthma and other respiratory illnesses. To combat mold and mildew in your basement, make sure there are sufficient artificial ventilation systems in place like air conditioners and ceiling fans. Make sure there is no dampness in the basement -- get leaky pipes fixed immediately.
If you notice mold in the basement, don't try to scrub off the spores or wash them with detergent. Scrubbing only shakes the spores free, and detergents are completely useless on mold and mildew. Orange, spongy, massive mold body growing inside walls and floors. and out of carpet. Mushrooms with caps have been visible too. I also believe that I am starting to have health issues related. |
Have noticed a clump of mold/black powder outside our bedroom window. This week noticed a black powdery residue behind the floor board in our bedroom. House was flooded 4 1/2' in August 2007 but had clean up and make sure everything was dry and treated before enclosing. Would like a confirmation and an estimate that it is mold and how much it would cost to completely remove. |
